The following Vineland Health Update has been put together for you by the team at Back Pain Relief Center. Hovering Parents Not Beneficial to Children. Kids with parents who push them too hard for good grades may be more likely to become highly self-critical or anxious and depressed. Researchers studied seven-year-old children from ten schools in Singapore, as well as at least one of their parents.

They found that children whose parents acted intrusively had high expectations of academic performance, or overreacted when the child made a mistake were at an increased risk for being overly critical of themselves. Additionally, they found that children who were highly self-critical had higher levels of anxiety or depression symptoms. Study leader Dr. Ryan Hong adds, “When parents become intrusive in their children’s lives, it may signal to the children that what they do is never good enough.” Journal of Personality, June 2016

Health Alert In Vineland

Painkiller Misuse Has Doubled in the Last Decade. Misuse of prescription opioid painkillers among adults in the United States (US) more than doubled from the early 2000s to 2013. A government survey revealed that more than 4% of adults reported the nonmedical use of addictive opioids in 2012-2013 while less than 2% of adults reported such behavior just ten years earlier. Dr. Nora Volkow, the director of the US National Institute on Drug Abuse notes, “The increasing misuse of prescription opioid pain relievers poses a myriad of serious public health consequences.” Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, June 2016

Diet:

Corn Masa Flour Now Fortified with Important B-Vitamin. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved the addition of folic acid, also known as vitamin B-9, to corn masa flour. This type of flour is often used in foods such as tortillas, tacos, tortilla chips, and tamales. According to experts, folic acid is known to lower the risk of an infant being born with neural tube defects, which can affect the brain, spine, and spinal cord. Dr. Jonca Bull, director of the FDA’s Office of Minority Health writes, “By adding folic acid to corn masa flour, we have the opportunity to impact a large segment of the [United States] population and protect parents and their children from the devastating birth defects that are linked to insufficient folic acid consumed by the mother before and during pregnancy.” Food and Drug Administration, June 2016

Exercise:

Running Releases Protein Linked to Improved Memory. A new study has found a new possible reason why running appears to boost memory recall. The four-month study found that exercise increased the levels of a protein called cathepsin B in the blood of human participants, and these increases correlated with improved performance on complex recall tasks, such as drawing from memory. Cell Metabolism, June 2016

Chiropractic:

Strengthening Exercises Beneficial for Mechanical Neck Disorders. Doctors of Chiropractic commonly recommend their neck pain patients perform specific exercises between visits as part of their treatment plan. A recent study assessed the effectiveness of strengthening exercises on adults with either chronic neck pain or chronic cervicogenic headaches (headaches caused by dysfunction in the neck) and found that specific exercises focused on strengthening the neck, upper back, and shoulder resulted in improvements in pain, disability, function, patient satisfaction, and quality of life. Manual Therapies, August 2016

Wellness/Prevention:

Genetic Tests May Someday Spot Brain Infections. Currently, more than 50% of inflammatory disorders and infections of the brain go undiagnosed, resulting in patients receiving treatments for symptoms that can do more harm than good. In a recent experiment, researchers took tissue samples from patients with MRI-confirmed brain inflammation and rapidly sequenced several portions of the sample using off-the-shelf technologies.

Then, a computer quickly scanned the genomes, excluded human DNA, and compared the remaining sequences with those of possible pathogens. In five out of the ten patients, the researchers identified possible culprits, including one bacteria that hadn’t yet been discovered. Study author Dr. Carlos Pardo-Villamizar writes, “We hope to develop this technique further as a way to bring the diagnosis rate of inflammatory brain disorders and infections closer to 100 percent so we can treat patients more effectively.” Neurology: Neuroimmunology & Neuroinflammation, June 2016
