Using data from a long-term study, researchers report that men and women involved in civic groups during their 30s and 40s scored higher on cognitive tests than their peers who refrained from such community groups. Furthermore, participants who participated in more than one group exhibited even better mental faculties. BMC Psychology, December 2016

Health Alert In Vineland

How Safe Are Baby Teethers? A chemical banned from children’s drinking cups is still being used in baby teethers. Researchers tested five dozen baby teethers and found that all of them contained bisphenol-A (BPA) as well as other endocrine-disrupting chemicals. The researchers say the presence of these potentially harmful chemicals on the surface is concerning, especially since most of the teethers were labeled BPA-free or non-toxic. The findings reveal the need for policies to protect infants from exposure to potentially toxic chemicals found in teethers. Environmental Science & Technology, December 2016

Diet:

Vegetarian Diets Good for People and the Planet. Vegetarian diets are not only healthy for people but the environment as well. According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, vegetarians generally have lower risks of obesity and chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers. Vegetarian diets also leave a lighter carbon footprint, as the components of a vegetarian diet require fewer resources such as land, water, fuel, and fertilizer compared with raising livestock. Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, December 2016

Exercise:

Tai Chi Beneficial for Vets with PTSD. Tai Chi is a form of exercise that involves a series of movements performed in a slow, focused manner accompanied by deep breathing and mindfulness. In this study, seventeen veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms completed a four-session introduction to Tai Chi program. After the final session, nearly 94% of participants were very or mostly satisfied with their progress and found Tai Chi to be helpful for managing distressing PTSD symptoms such as intrusive thoughts, difficulties with concentration, and physiological arousal. Researcher Dr. Barbara Niles writes, “Our findings also indicate that Tai Chi is a safe physical activity and appropriate for individuals with varying physical capabilities. Given our positive findings, additional research is needed to empirically evaluate Tai Chi as a treatment for symptoms of PTSD.” BMJ Open, November 2016

Chiropractic:

What Is Causing My Neck Pain? Aching, throbbing, or shooting pain in your neck can be a result of several causes and conditions. The Mayo Clinic lists the following possible causes of neck pain: straining of neck muscles when using your computer, phone, or reading in bed; osteoarthritis of the neck; a compressed nerve; trauma, such as an injury resulting from a car accident; and conditions such as meningitis, cancer, or rheumatoid arthritis. Mayo Clinic, December 2016

Wellness/Prevention:

Extra Time Outdoors When Young May Reduce Nearsightedness. Children who spend more time outside may be less likely to develop nearsightedness. Researchers looked at 371 Europeans with nearsightedness and 2,797 without the condition and then estimated how much sun exposure the participants got from ages 14 to 29. They found that those who reported getting more sun exposure in their younger years were less likely to develop vision problems. The authors suspect that additional exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet B (UVB) rays may play a role in reducing nearsightedness. They add that being outside only appears to affect myopia before it occurs, as once a child needs glasses, outside having no effect on reversing the condition. JAMA Ophthalmology, December 2016
